Search Engines Optimization

In this article All Web Now owner Ben Wade offers the average website owner advice on improving his or her chances of getting indexed on the search engines otherwise known as Search Engines Optimization.

So, you're still asking yourself how do I get my website on the search engines? There are many strategies to legitimately get your website listed on the search engines as well as get a better PR (Page Rank). Here are a few solutions:

1. Submit Your Website
Most importantly make sure you submit your site to the search engines manually and only once. Twice if it's been longer than 6 months with no results. Submitting more than once can put you at risk of being blacklisted. Although if you submit 2-3 times, the search engines probably will not blacklist your site. It's just better to be on the safe side by submitting just once. Here are the links to submit your site to the search engines for indexing for free.

Google Submit
Yahoo! Submit
Dmoz Submit

2. Use rich, relevent text.
Search engines love text with good content and links to relevant webpages.  If you're using flash as your main format, it would be wise to set up an html version of your website and create more pages to expand the content. Although not recommended you can (to a small degree) duplicate some pages with different keywords in the title area and different variations of content within the body. But, don’t go overboard or you may get blacklisted from some of the search engines (mainly google and yahoo).  This can be effective but also risky, so please execute with caution and variences.

A good way to implement relevent content is to add a google adsense box to your site (see a live google adsense example at the very bottom of this page). The good thing about adsense is that you make money when people click on these relevent links. Your site also has a better chance of improving page rank due to the relevent content within the link boxes.

You can sign up for a google adsense account for free by clicking the button here:

3. Manage your WebSite's Titles
You need to make your titles apply to each of your pages subject content.  Make these titles similar to keywords in which you think your visitors would use to search for your site.

Here is an example.

Let's say you have a website where you offer pet sitting services and the name of your company is Abby's Pet Cabby. You love your name and you want everyone that has a pet to go to your website and learn about your sevices. Well, it might seem odd, but one of the last things you want to do is put just your company name in the title tags of your website code. First time searchers are not going to know the name of your company and the chances of them searching for "Abby's Pet Cabby" as a search phrase are slim to none because you're a brand new company. You'll want to implement something like these keyword phrases in your title brackets:

pet sitting professionals
pet sitting services
pet help

Again, put in your title whatever you think your potential clients would most likely type in the search box to search for your services. You might want to ask your friends and family that would be interested in your services what keywords they might use to search for something like "pet sitting professionals".

Apply the keywords in your title tags within your html head. (i.e. <title> pet sitting professionals</title>)

4. Link Exchange
Exchanging links with other websites with similar content (not necessarily competitors) but websites with the same subject matter as yours is key for climbing the Page rank ladder. For instance, it would be a huge boost for Abby's Pet Cabby's website above to be posted or advertised on a large pet supply companies website. A pet supply company is not a competitor but more of an alliance in this scenerio. Since almost 100% of pet supply companies' clientele have pets, this is a great place for a pet sitting company to have their website advertised. So, if Abby's Pet Cabby had the ability to put a link to her website on this large pet supply company's homepage and a link their website on her homepage, her website's ranking over time would shoot up. Having reciprocated links on your website linked up with other high ranked website having similar content is your best chance of ranking higher on the search engines.

5. Post your business
Another good way to get good positioning is to post your services in blogs and forums as well as things like craigslist and other websites that offer free solicited postings.  Remember to never use automated software tools that do this. The search engines can sniff out submissions via those tools very well and it would be an extremely effective way to get blacklisted quickly. So, always post your listings in person and add a little personal flare the postings to set you apart from all the other posts. The search engines pick all these posts up very nicely.

6. Decide whether you need paid advertising or not
This is more of a deterance then a solution. I would advise most new website owners that are small, regional businesses to not pay for internet search positions via pay per click.  I’ve known many businesses that have almost gone out of business by doing this.  If you have the finances to do paid advertising then you may be ready to use tools like Google Adwords. There are many other strategies for getting listed on the search engines effectively, but these are the basics you need to know to get started. Once you get a feel for it, you can then decide to take search engine optimization to a new level. Remember, when you do optimize your website's content, it may be a while for these changes to take effect because the search engines are slow, especially google cuz they can be. You might not see any improvements for weeks or even months, but it’s worth the waite when the changes do update.
